LIBER is concerned and follows with sadness the development of the events taking place in Ukraine. We express our solidarity with the Ukrainian people, and colleagues of the Ukrainian scientific, academic and student communities.
As a research library community, LIBER emphasises the right to research and knowledge for all during this conflict and fully supports the international library and university community in mobilising accurate information about the situation in Ukraine, in order to preserve democracy and freedom of expression as well as to protect the lives and careers of Ukrainian citizens, academics, students, researchers and civil society actors.
This war will have serious consequences for research and education in Ukraine. We will monitor the situation closely and are determined to do all we can to help researchers and students in higher education institutions in this country.
As the board of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL), and in concert with the International Federation of Library Associations and Blue Shield, we stand united with the staff of the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine in Kyiv, charged with caring for their nation’s precious intellectual and cultural heritage.
We condemn the current military aggression against Ukraine, which threatens this heritage as surely as it threatens Ukrainian lives and communities.

The Wiener Holocaust Library condemns both Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Holocaust distortion used to justify it. As the world’s oldest institution devoted to the study of the Holocaust and genocide, created and supported by refugees from Nazism and their descendants, we call upon international and national organisations to support those fleeing Vladimir Putin’s violence. The history and memory of the Holocaust should never be abused to justify militarism and oppression.
Putin has spuriously declared his aim to be to save Eastern Ukrainians from genocide and “denazify” the country. Both claims are gross distortions of reality. Ukraine is a sovereign nation with a vibrant, pluralistic society. The evidence is clear that most Russian-speaking Ukrainians, even those sceptical of an orientation toward the EU, would not welcome a Russian puppet government, which could only be imposed upon the country with massive repression.
Putin’s bogus justifications for his war of aggression are underpinned by misrepresentations of history inherited from the Soviet era. These distortions downplay the suffering of Jews in the Holocaust, presenting Russians as the primary victims of Nazism, and indeed sometimes resort to antisemitic tropes. Putin’s depiction of Ukraine as a “Nazi state” is not a response to the activity of the far-right in Ukraine; it is a falsehood emanating from his incapability of acknowledging the right of Ukrainians, regardless of language or ethnicity, to define themselves as Ukrainians. The fact that Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, is Jewish, and that his grandfather fought the Nazis in the ranks of the Red Army, is an indication of how absurd and offensive these claims are.
The Wiener Holocaust Library, as Britain’s library of record of the Holocaust and genocide, will always actively refute the abuse of history, especially when used as a weapon of war.
Stowarzyszenie Bibliotekarzy Polskich solidaryzuje się z narodem ukraińskim w walce z agresorem, który niszczy kraj, dorobek pokoleń, zabija niewinnych ludzi.
Zarząd Główny SBP podejmuje próbę nawiązania kontaktu z Ukraińskim Stowarzyszeniem Bibliotek. W przesłanej korespondencji przekazaliśmy swe poparcie dla bohaterskich działań społeczeństwa ukraińskiego w ich walce o niepodległość, porządek oraz ład polityczny i społeczny. Zapewniliśmy, że swej solidarności z narodem ukraińskim nie pozostawiamy bez konkretnych deklaracji. Chcemy w miarę swoich możliwości pomóc. Czekamy na informacje dotyczące rodzaju i zakresu potrzebnej pomocy.
Zwracamy się również do Koleżanek i Kolegów, członków Stowarzyszenia Bibliotekarzy Polskich w całym kraju, aby włączyli się w działania mające na celu pomoc i wsparcie dla osób z Ukrainy, które w ostatnich dniach przyjechały na Państwa teren. Prosimy o przygotowanie w bibliotekach, w których Państwo pracujecie, w miarę możliwości, propozycji dostępu do literatury, potrzebnych informacji, organizacji zajęć dla dzieci, które pozbawione zostały możliwości zabawy lub nauki, a także włączanie się do innych działań np. współpracując z samorządami, instytucjami pomocowymi, stowarzyszeniami lokalnymi i fundacjami.
Prosimy także o podzielenie się Państwa wiedzą, doświadczeniem, wnioskami z ostatnich kilku dni – jak wygląda sytuacja na Państwa terenie? Czy w Państwa otoczeniu są osoby potrzebujące pomocy, czy są wśród nich bibliotekarze, których możemy wesprzeć?
